Many people around the world are holding their collective breath this weekend as Greece returns to the polls in a second attempt at electing a government. Some nerves are to be expected. The last election was split between the far left wing Syriza party and the far right wing Golden Dawn, and the last thing anyone with a heart for humanity wants to see is a European nation again governed by fascists. It’s fair to say that the last experiemtn with fascism didn’t turn out well.

However one of the upsides of the Greek crisis is that young people, many of whom are well educated but unemployed, are ditching the city and taking up rural smallholding on ancestral land. And they’re loving it. Check out this story from today’s Age website about the Greek tragedy and the return to a simpler, agrarian way of life. Also this January piece from the NY Times for a broader overview.
